Overview of dataset and file management

Introduction to Pennsieve Datasets, Files, and Folders

Datasets are the primary containers for data in a Pennsieve Workspace. Users can upload files to a dataset and create meta-data records within a dataset-specific metadata graph. Datasets are by default only accessible by the user who created the dataset ('dataset owner') but can be shared with other members of the workspace. A workspace can have many datasets that are shared with different subsets of users and teams within the workspace.

A snapshot of a dataset can be published to make the dataset publicly available. This process makes all files and metadata available publicly on one of the Pennsieve Repositories (see Introduction to open repositories). It is therefore important to structure datasets in a workspace such that each dataset is a 'publishable entity'.

Dataset Roles

All Pennsieve users including "Guest" accounts can have any of the following roles in a dataset. The roles are hierarchical and roles inherit the permissions of lesser roles. Dataset permissions are based on the role a user has within a dataset.

RoleDescription
Ownercan invite people and teams to a dataset, edit and delete models, records and files. Additionally, only owners can publish a dataset to Pennsieve Discover.
Managercan invite people and teams to a dataset, edit and delete models, records and files, but cannot publish a dataset.
Editorcan create, edit, or delete records and files in a dataset.
Viewercan view and browse all information in a dataset, but have no other permissions.
